Flex air stall
Cow-Welfare’s Flex Air Stall, like the regular Flex Stall, is a flexible solution that guarantees high cow comfort and improved welfare in your barn. The difference between Flex Stalls and Flex Air Stalls is that this product combines the benefits of ventilation with high-quality flex stalls.
Imagine a hot summer day – you’ve turned on the ventilation system to give your cows some cooling and fresh air. There’s just one problem: The airflow is better near the feeding table, which makes the cows prefer to stand there. This isn’t efficient for milk production or cow health.
With Cow-Welfare’s Flex Air Stall, you will get ventilation for your cows, right where it is most needed: in the cubicle. The Flex Air Stall will reduce the risk of your cows experiencing heat stress, and it will help remove stagnant and poor-quality air from the barn.
Why choose ventilation in the cubicle?
Many dairy farmers associate the summer months with heat stress and therefore also a decrease in milk yield for their cows.
Cows thrive best in temperatures between -4 and 18°C (25-65°F) and signs of heat stress can appear at 20°C (68°F).
One of the downsides of a heated barn is that the cow will seek areas with better airflow, which normally will be higher up or near open doors and windows. This results in increased cow traffic, a higher risk of stress among the cows, and many cows remaining standing instead of ruminating and resting in the cubicle.
This leads to an increased risk of decline in performance, as well as hoof and udder diseases, due to immune deficiencies caused by heat stress.
This risk will be significantly reduced by installing Flex Air Stalls in the barn. With ventilation directly in the cubicle, cows can rest in a stall with constant airflow, so they won’t suffer the discomfort of heat stress.
The cow will therefore maintain the most optimal rest and rumination time.
A relaxed cow will produce more milk and stay healthier.
How does it work?
In most barns, it is difficult to replace stagnant air and maintain adequate airflow in and around the stalls. The Flex Air Stall system infuses fresh air from outside the barn directly into the cubicle. This is accomplished with a motorized fan that blows air into a tube connected to the flexible pipes in each cubicle. The air is directed through holes pointing downward at the cow, at a 45-degree angle.
What is the difference?
When fresh air is directed from outside into the cubicle, it encourages cows to lie down more, even when temperatures are above average.
Most barn ventilation systems provide the best airflow at higher elevations or in open areas, leading cows to prefer standing rather than lying down.
Flex Air Stall provides fresh air where your cows need it the most, which is in the cubicle, where most milk production occurs. With motorized fans connected outside the barn, cows receive fresh air throughout their entire resting period. In this way she will be encouraged to lie down and be relaxed, rather than stay standing, which both strains the hooves and stresses the cow.
Keep your cows healthy and calm, even on warm days
The Cow-Welfare Flex Air Stall offers all the advantages of the Flex Stall system, combined with improved ventilation and enhanced well-being, even in hot temperatures.
Flex Stall leads to optimal cow traffic in the barn and will guide the cows to a correct positioning in the cubicle, with no pressure wounds or stress associated with lying down. When ventilation is added to these benefits you’ll create the perfect resting environment for your cows.
When cow traffic flows naturally, it will reduce stress in the barn which helps the cow to have a more natural resting cycle.
Heat stress in cows can contribute to increased cow traffic in the barn, so when ventilation is added directly in the cubicle, it encourages the cow to lie down more and thereby reduces stress.
Less stress = more rest = better immune system and increased milk production.
More possibilities in the same unique product
Cow-Welfare’s Flex Air Stall retains the same flexibility in customization for cattle size and breed as the already known Flex Stall. The equipment will be adjusted for the herd, which gives you the possibility to fully utilize the potential of the flexible inventory, while the cow gets fresh air via the connected ventilation system.
This minimizes the risk of pressure injuries and reduces the likelihood of disease and performance losses due to heat stress.
Did you know that heat stress can cause reproductive disorders?
Heat stress in dairy cows can cause fatal consequences for the herd in several generations.
Most farmers associate heat stress with mastitis and loss of milk yield but there’s a lot more to it than the “here-and-now”-experiences.
Cows experiencing heat stress during gestation can have a significant impact on their offspring subsequently for generations. Heat stress causes negative development of the fetus, particularly weakening the immune system. If the immune system does not develop properly, the calf will be more susceptible to illnesses, which in the long term can cause decreased life production.
